The Cyprus Institute (CyI) is a European non-profit Science and Technology oriented Educational and Research Institution based in Cyprus and led by an acclaimed Board of Trustees. The research agenda of the CyI is pursued at its five Research Centres: The Computation-based Science and Technology Research Centre (CaSToRC), the Science and Technology in Archaeology and Culture Research Centre (STARC), the Energy Environment Water Research Centre (EEWRC), the Climate and Atmosphere Research Centre (CARE-C), and the Science and Technology Driven Policy and Innovation Research Centre (STeDI-RC). Considerable cross-centre interaction is a characteristic of the Institute's culture.

The Cyprus Institute invites applications for a highly qualified and motivated individual to join the Institute as an Associate Research Scientist in the Environmental Predictions Department of CARE-C. The selected candidate will further develop the Institute's research on advanced statistical methods for improved climate projections and the support of impact studies. The research will primarily consist of bias correction and statistical downscaling of seasonal forecasts and climate predictions. A strong interaction with the climate change impact community is expected for sectors such as human health, energy, water resources, etc. This research will also contribute to the PREVENT Horizon Europe project ("Improved predictability of extremes over the Mediterranean from seasonal to decadal timescales").

The initial period of the appointment will be for a duration of 24 months with the possibility of renewal, depending on performance and availability of funds. An internationally competitive remuneration package will be offered, which is commensurate with the level of experience of the successful candidate.

Responsibilities/activities to be involved in:

Statistical analysis of climate data.Development and application of advanced statistical methods for bias correction and downscaling.Contribution to scientific publications.Contribution to project deliverables and participation in project meetings in Cyprus or abroad.Presentations in scientific conferences and participation in outreach events.Contribution to proposal writing.

Specific Requirements

Required Qualifications

PhD in Climatology, Atmospheric Sciences or Applied Statistics.At least 3 years of relevant research experience at a post-doctoral level.Relevant publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals.Presentations in international scientific conferences.Experience in statistical applications for climate analysis (bias correction, downscaling, machine learning, etc.).Experience in working with climate model output (NetCDF files and other common formats).Strong analytical and programming skills in R or Python.Ability to work independently and within a team.English language (excellent) both verbal and writing skills.Good communication and teamwork skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Good understanding of Mediterranean climate conditions (e.g., synoptic and dynamic drivers).
  • Experience in dealing with project timelines and deliverables.
  • Knowledge of the Greek language, both verbal and written.
