ONE (1) POSITION OF RESEARCH TECHNICIAN

ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence ) of Cyprus University of Technology ) invites applications for one (1) position of Research Technician of ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence. The position is open either on a full-time (100%) or part-time employment basis. The successful candidates will conduct research and develop products under multiple Eratosthenes Centre of Excellence projects funded by the European Union, including the flagship Excelsior H2020 Teaming project ).

ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence is an autonomous Centre of Excellence with Cyprus University of Technology as its sole stakeholder, specialising in earth observation, space technology and geospatial analysis. Cyprus University of Technology has a 13-year experience in earth observations and geospatial analysis. Through the "EXCELSIOR" H2020 Teaming Project ), ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence aspires to become a Digital Innovation Hub for Earth Observation and Geospatial Information by offering knowledge, responsible research, open innovation and application services capable of sustaining Cyprus' development. ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence aspires to actively contribute to the European Research Area (ERA) priorities in Atmosphere and Climate, Resilient Societies and Big Earth Data Analytics, as well as to become the reference Earth Observation/Geoinformation Centre for research and innovation in the Eastern Mediterranean, Middle East and North Africa (EMMENA) region.

A core activity of ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence is to conduct high caliber, state-of-the-art research, both basic and applied. A central task is to acquire research funding for the Centre, to provide facilities to the researchers, and to support them to acquire funding for their research independently and via international and local collaborations. Collaborations with industrial partners are particularly encouraged and facilitated.

Appropriate measures of success will be collaboratively determined based on the Centre's strategic growth plan and sustainability targets. These will be revised periodically by the Executive Committee and the Board of Directors.

Description of the Position
The successful candidate will support the installation, maintenance, and calibration of environmental, hydrologic, and atmospheric instruments and sensors, while ensuring high-quality data collection and documentation. The role includes conducting field and laboratory measurements across Cyprus, performing quality control procedures, and providing technical support to research teams. This position requires regular fieldwork under varying weather conditions and occasional physical effort.

Duties and Responsibilities
The successful candidate is expected to contribute towards shaping and advancing its research and innovation agenda by:
  • Install, set-up, configure and maintain for different types of instruments and sensors of the Centre including soil, hydrologic, agrometeorological and environmental (atmospheric, climatic, solar) sensors and/or instruments, as well as data loggers:
    • provide technical support to the research departments and/or clusters for the proper installation and monitoring of instruments;
    • maintain and troubleshoot of various instruments, sensors and data loggers across different research or operational departments;
    • establishing communication protocols between the data loggers and the local server;
  • Conduct field (e.g. leaf area index, spectroradiometer, soil sampling) and laboratory measurements, related to environmental and climate research, under various weather conditions (e.g., rain). This includes also regular travelling at various locations in Cyprus;
  • Performing QA/QC Procedures in Raw Data, for quality control checks on raw data generated by instruments;
  • Recording all activities by maintaining a detailed and accurate record of all activities related to the operation, maintenance, and data quality of instruments and observations;
  • Performing routine calibrations: a) conduct routine calibrations of specific instruments, such as the double monochromator spectrophotometer, to ensure accuracy and reliability of measurements & b) document calibration procedures and results systematically;
  • Developing/drafting of Stand Operating Procedures as well as User Manuals for beginners;
  • The tasks of this position may require physical effort such as carrying or lifting instrumentation in the fields;
  • Ensuring continuous operation of the ground-based remote-sensing station together with the GBS/CARO team:
    • Instrument installation, maintenance and calibration including communication with manufacturers for this purpose 
    • Regular screening and maintenance of mechanical, electric, optoelectronic and computer equipment 
    • Ensuring data flow from equipment to central data hub 
    • Working hand-in-hand with the other ECoE team members for further optimization and further development of the station.
Qualifications
  • Graduate of Technical Secondary Education School or diploma at the level of HND (Higher National Diploma) in the electromechanical direction;
  • BSc related to the above will be considered an advantage;
  • Previous experience of at least 2 years in the installation and set-up, maintenance / calibration of data loggers and sensors is required;
  • Previous experience in land surface, agricultural, hydrological and environmental / atmospheric, solar monitoring and filed work will be considered an advantage;
  • High level of problem-solving and organizational skills;
  • Ability to perform technical tasks for the proper installation and operation of the research infrastructure (e.g. wiring, housing, mounting);
  • Keep and maintain Laboratory Logbook;
  • Ability to adapt to a multidisciplinary research environment;
  • Excellent knowledge of the English and Greek languages, both verbal and in writing is required;
  • Driver's License;
  • Knowledge of a scripting language or willingness to be trained internally by ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence staff to use relevant instruments/infrastructure of the Centre;

The appointment will be for a period of one year (12 months) with the prospect of renewal for another year. The annual gross salary for the full-time position will be at the salary scale A2-A5, depending on qualifications and experience. It is noted that there is provision for 13th salary (the cost of the 13th salary is proportionally incorporated in the monthly remuneration).
