ONE (1) SYSTEMS ENGINEER POSITION AT THE BIG EARTH DATA ANALYTICS DEPARTMENT

ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence ) of Cyprus University of Technology ) invites applications for one (1) position of Systems Engineer at the Big Earth Data Analytics Department of ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence. The positions are open either on a full-time (100%) or part-time employment basis.

ERATOSTHENES CoE is an autonomous Centre of Excellence with Cyprus University of Technology as its sole stakeholder, specialising in earth observation, space technology and geospatial analysis. Cyprus University of Technology has experience in earth observations and geospatial analysis since 2007. Through the "EXCELSIOR" H2020 Teaming Project ), ERATOSTHENES CoE aspires to become a Digital Innovation Hub for Earth Observation and Geospatial Information by offering knowledge, responsible research, open innovation and application services capable of sustaining Cyprus' development. ERATOSTHENES CoE aspires to actively contribute to the European Research Area (ERA) priorities in Atmosphere and Climate, Resilient Societies and Big Earth Data Analytics, as well as to become the reference Earth Observation/Geoinformation Centre for research and innovation in the Eastern Mediterranean, Middle East and North Africa (EMMENA) region.

A core activity of ERATOSTHENES CoE is to conduct high caliber, state-of-the-art research, both basic and applied. A central task is to acquire research funding for the Centre, to provide facilities to the researchers, and to support them to acquire funding for their research independently and via international and local collaborations. Collaborations with industrial partners are particularly encouraged and facilitated.
Appropriate measures of success will be collaboratively determined based on the Centre's strategic growth plan and sustainability targets. These will be revised periodically by the Executive Committee and the Board of Directors.

Description of the Position:
This position is seeking a Systems Engineer for day-to-day operations of the ERATOSTHENES Data Center. The Systems Engineer will be responsible for the system administration of high-performance computing systems, big data storage, network as well as pre- and post-processing systems.

Duties and Responsibilities
The successful candidates will be placed in the Big Earth Data Analytics Department of ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence, and are expected to contribute towards shaping and advancing its research and innovation agenda by: 

GENERAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Contributes to the organization, coordination, planning and supervision of the ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence systems;
2. Ensures the procurement, installation, security, configuration, participation, analysis, design, testing and the proper functioning of information equipment systems;
3. Provides consulting services and support to systems using internationally accepted methodologies and standards, conducts techno-economic studies in the construction of software/hardware and  prepares user manuals;
4. Conducts feasibility studies, maintains records of work, problems and equipment, collects and analyzes data and information, prepares notes, reports and minutes;
5. Participates in the preparation and writing of technical terms, specifications, manuals and other aids and documents for the development and operations of the ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence;
6. Ability to collaborate and exchange views at a technical level with external partners;
7. Configures, customizes, and manages the Data Ecosystem of ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence;
8. Monitoring and manage the performance of servers, including software and hardware, to ensure they are operating at an optimum level;
9. Contribution to the implementation of European Funded Projects;
10. Assisting in the establishment of local, regional, and international research networks that can support the long-term research agenda and priorities of the ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence;
11. Working towards fulfilling ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence mission goals;
12. Ensuring that the KPIs and other performance targets as set by the ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence are met;
13. Undertaking any other relevant duties deemed necessary.

Qualifications and Experience

• University Degree or equivalent qualification in at least one of the following subjects or a combination of these subjects with another relevant field: Computer Science and/or Informatics (including Software Engineering, Information Technology, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Data Communications, Computer Science, Digital Engineering, Electronic Imaging, Management Information Systems);
• Possession of a university postgraduate degree (Master's level) or PHD degree or equivalent qualification should consider as an advantage;
• Experience in managing Linux Servers and Windows Servers;
• Administration experience in VMware;
• Working knowledge of overall IT Infrastructure and Computer Architecture;
• Certifications (i.e., DevOps, Cloud, Linux, Network Security will be considered an advantage.

The appointment will be for a period of two years (24 months) with the prospect of renewal for another two years. The annual gross salary for the (full-time) position will range from the salary scale A8 to A10, depending on qualifications and experience. It is noted that there is a provision for 13th salary which is proportionally incorporated in the monthly remuneration.
