Data Engineer

Universal Life is seeking to recruit a Data Engineer to join the Information Technology Department, at the Company's Head Offices in Nicosia.

The candidate will have the opportunity to play a key role in designing, building, and maintaining our enterprise data platform. The candidate will work closely with business, finance, actuarial, and data science teams to ensure the delivery of reliable, governed, and high-quality data across our systems. The role reports within the Information Technology Department and collaborates with key stakeholders across the organization to enable strategic decision-making, advanced analytics, and AI-driven insights.

Main Responsibilities:

• Design, implement, and maintain the company's Data Warehouse and Data Governance architecture.
• Develop and manage ETL/ELT pipelines to extract, transform, and load data from multiple sources (i.e. Core Systems, SAP, CRM, etc.).
• Build and optimize data marts, staging areas, and analytical views to support Power BI and other visualization tools.
• Ensure data quality, integrity, and security through automated controls, monitoring, and documentation.
• Maintain the data catalogue and metadata management processes, embedding data governance practices within data pipelines.
• Collaborate with Finance, Actuarial, and Business Units to support regulatory and management reporting requirements, ensuring accurate, consistent, and timely data delivery across reporting cycles.
• Support data migration and integration tasks with the new Core Insurance System implementation.
• Oversee the provisioning, configuration, and deployment of SQL Server instances according to best practices and company standards.
• Manage DW database performance by monitoring and optimizing SQL Server configurations, indexing strategies, query performance, and resource allocation.
• Troubleshoot and resolve performance bottlenecks, deadlocks, and other database-related issues. Collaborate with infrastructure teams to align SQL Server DW environments with scalability and disaster recovery requirements.
• Collaborate with Data Analytics and AI scientists to design and implement analytical datasets, AI models, and predictive reports for portfolio analysis, customer segmentation, and business forecasting.
• Contribute to advanced analytics initiatives (e.g., loyalty schemes, behavioural analytics, and operational insights).
• Work collaboratively with external partners and consultants to align business and technical data needs.

Qualifications:

• A University degree (or equivalent) in Computer Science or Computer Engineering or a related subject.
• 3–5+ years of experience in data engineering, data warehousing, or analytics roles.
• Strong technical skills in SQL, Python and ETL/ELT tools.
• Experience with data modelling (conceptual, logical, and physical).
• Familiarity with data governance frameworks, data catalogues, and metadata management.
• Experience with Power BI is a plus.
• Knowledge of cloud data services (e.g. Azure Data Factory, Synapse, or equivalent) is a plus.
• Strong analytical mindset, stakeholder communication skills, and a collaborative approach.
• Exposure to AI/ML, predictive analytics, and portfolio or risk modelling within the insurance or financial services domain will be considered a strong advantage.
