Job Title: Design & Computer Science Faculty Lead/Design Teacher

Reports to: Secondary Principal 

Role Purpose

The Design & Computer Science Faculty Lead provides academic leadership for Design and Computer Science across IB MYP, DP, CP and Waldorf tracks, ensuring coherent curricula, high-quality teaching, robust assessment practices, and safe, well-managed learning environments (including labs, workshops, and makerspaces). The role combines faculty leadership with active classroom teaching in Design, modelling inquiry-driven, project-based learning that integrates STEAM and real-world problem solving.

Key Responsibilities

Teaching Responsibilities (Design)

  • Teach MYP Design and/or DP Design Technology (up to 15 periods/week), delivering rigorous, student-centred learning.
  • Model best practice in design cycle, prototyping, CAD/CAM, digital fabrication, and iterative assessment/feedback.
  • Embed safe working routines and risk assessments in workshop/studio practice; maintain a positive, inclusive studio culture.

Academic Leadership

  • Lead the design, implementation, alignment, and periodic review of Design & Computer Science curricula across MYP/DP/CP/Waldorf, ensuring horizontal and vertical progression.
  • Champion inquiry-, concept- and project-based pedagogy; promote authentic briefs that connect to community and industry.
  • Align schemes of work with IB/Waldorf philosophies, ATL skills, and school-wide learning priorities.

Faculty Support & Development

  • Coach and mentor Design & Computer Science teachers (planning, differentiation, assessment, classroom management).
  • Lead regular department meetings; curate PD (e.g., IB subject workshops, internal mentoring, moderation).
  • Support onboarding/induction of new teachers; build a collaborative, reflective team culture.

Assessment & Reporting

  • Establish consistent assessment and standardisation across Design & Computer Science (criteria-based IB assessment, common tasks, internal moderation).
  • Use attainment and progress data to inform teaching, interventions, and departmental improvement plans; ensure timely, high-quality reports.

Collaboration & Communication

  • Serve as the primary liaison between the Design & Computer Science Faculty, Programme Coordinators, and School Leadership.
  • Co-lead whole-school STEAM initiatives and interdisciplinary projects (e.g., Design–Science capstones, exhibitions).
  • Communicate clearly with students and families about learning aims, safety expectations, and project timelines.

Student Success & School Culture

  • Promote student engagement via clubs, competitions, fairs (e.g., maker showcases, science fairs, robotics).
  • Work with Learning Support/Wellbeing teams to ensure all students can succeed; embed the IB Learner Profile and school values in daily practice.

Facilities, Resources & Safety

  • Oversee Design studios, labs, and makerspaces: budgeting/prioritising resources (materials, tools, PPE), maintenance schedules, inventories.
  • Lead health & safety compliance and training for staff and students (risk assessments, safe systems of work, incident logs).
  • Plan equipment upgrades (e.g., 3D printers, laser cutters, microcontrollers) aligned to curriculum goals and staff capability.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Design / Industrial/Product Design
  • Minimum 5–7 years teaching experience with MYP Design and/or DP Design Technology; IB experience essential.
  • Proven leadership in curriculum/faculty coordination; experience managing labs/workshops and H&S.
